淘米自己的翻译是:
Human being is ironic but rice is steel
You have to wash the rice before eating it.

很烂吧。。。请大家提供更好的翻译方法。。

更新，我现在更喜欢阿童木的翻法：
Man is iron, food is steel. To make rice, first you need to wash it

还有更好的吗？

Probably not "Human being is ironic", cause iron and ironic have different meanings.

Maybe something like:

Man is iron, food is steel. To make rice, first you need to wash it..........

If man is iron, the rice will be the Steel.
rice has to be washed before you eat it.

according to my understanding, 人是铁,饭是钢 is not telling people that the 人 is 铁,饭 is 钢, it's giving a assumption, saying, if man is iron, according to the logic of this Proverb, and the meaning it wants to explain, rice will be the steel...

how even, i still believe Chinese Proverbs couldn't never be translate in English clearly by following the Chinese logical sequence.

anyway..just for fun...hopefully, that make sense to you..
