LATEST:About 100 searchers are now looking for missing Auckland toddlerAsiling Symes, who has not been seen since just after 5pm last night.
Two-year-old Asiling (prounounced Ashling) Symes wentmissing from Longburn Rd, Henderson, west Auckland, about 5.15pm. Arain swollen stream runs behind properties on the road and the weatherovernight has been bad.
Police said they understood Asiling was with her parents who were cleaning her grandparents' vacant house when she disappeared.
"Theywere just tidying up the premises and they just turned around andAsiling had gone, she had just wandered off," Inspector Gary Davey toldRadio New Zealand.
Mr Davey told Stuff.co.nz this morning that the parents of the missing girl were "very very upset".
"This is an extremely difficult time for them."
About100 emergency services staff are this morning searching for Asiling, focusing on creeks and properties she may have stumbled into, Mr Daveysaid.
Police do not suspect foul play but, "as time goes on our fears and concerns are mounting".
"We're hoping she's just gone to sleep somewhere or somebody's taken her in and just not called the police yet," Mr Davey said.
Asiling'sfather, Alan Symes, said earlier that he was overwhelmed at the numberof people who had turned out to search for his daughter.
"Iwould just like to say to everyone out there my heartfelt thanks and mywife Angela's heartfelt thanks to all the neighbours, the volunteers, the search teams, fire rescue who are out there who have just turnedup."
The family's Border Collie dog went missing about thesame time as Asiling, but returned several minutes later. Police saythey have since had two possible sightings of Asiling - one by a younggirl and another by a neighbour.
They were keen to hear fromanyone who was in, or near, Longburn Rd between 5.15pm and 6.00pmyesterday, and, in particular, a young Asian woman who might havespoken to Asiling on the road about the time she was last seen.
"Thereis one potential sighting where it is suspected that Asiling may havebeen with an Asian woman at about 5.15 to 5.30 last night. We'd love tohear from that woman, if she has seen Asiling or if, hopefully, she'staken her in and looked after her," Mr Davey said.
Searchteams - including police officers, local residents and a helicopter- spent until 2.15am looking for the toddler who was last seen wearinga green parka/ski jacket, jeans with embroidered flowers on them andwhite tennis shoes.
The home where the Asiling vanished from, adouble-storey white wooden house, is being guarded by a single policecar and people can be seen standing on the deck outside the house.
Police have based their search headquarters at nearby Pomaria Primary School.
They wantto hear from anyone who may have noticed a young girl walking alone inthe surrounding streets of Rathgar, Kingdale and Pomaria Rds, or of anysuspicious people or vehicles in the neighbourhood. Residents of thearea have been asked to check their properties for Asiling, particularly sheds, out buildings, fencelines or other places that asmall child may explore or hide in.
Anyone with information about Asiling was asked to contact the Henderson Police Station on 09 839-0600. |
