The US tsunami monitoring centre has widened a warning following the huge quake and tsunami in Japan to virtually the entire Pacific coast, including New Zealand.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre expanded a previous alert to include all of the US, including Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the entire coast of Central and South America.
New Zealand Civil Defence said there was a potential threat of a tsunami reaching here, but it had not issued its own warning.
It said New Zealand Tsunami Expert Panel's assessment was that the threat to New Zealand was likely to be "marine only".
That meant strong and unusual currents were possible in the sea, rivers and estuaries. No land threat was expected at this time.
Historical events and pre-calculated tsunami models indicated the largest impact (a wave one-metre high) was expected along the coasts of the central and northern North Island.
The first wave would likely hit the far north at 6.23am and waves would continue for several hours.
People in New Zealand coastal areas were warned to stay off beaches and out of the water.
Marlborough's civil defence head Ross Hamilton was encouraging residents in low lying coastal areas such as Rarangi, Kaikoura and the eastern coastline to listen to the radio to keep informed about a potential tsunami threat to the area. Stuff and NZPA作者: Buffon 时间: 2011-3-11 23:45:34
