A tragedy shocked China and the world at 14:28pm on 12th May 2008. The massive earthquake wiped out tens of thousands of lives and destroyed millions of homes.
The Sichuan Conservatory of Music Mianyang Arts College in Mianyang City suffered badly with serious damage to lecture rooms, theatres, music studios and office buildings. Power and water are cut off, and all activities in the school have been suspended. Thousands of students had to abandon their school. Deserted, once famous school of music has now become a school of dead silence.
“Bring back the music!” is the rallying cry of every musician who has ever been with associated with the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. In New Zealand, its former students have shown great support in the ideal of “music to the rescue” concert. It is aimed to raise funds for the rebuilding of the Mianyang Arts College. It features outstanding musicians with international reputations from Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and China.
As the only event of its kind in Australasia, the concert offers patrons the chance to enjoy this great music as part of a highly concentrated experience rather than as a series of dispersed one-off recitals. The highly acclaimed pianist Gao Ping, taking time away from his busy international schedule, will also give a brand new recital.
All donors will be acknowledged in our programme and in the Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch local Chinese newspapers. Donations will be passed to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music Mianyang Arts College via the Chinese Embassy.
