MORONI – A passenger jet carrying 150 people has crashed into the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean, according to reports.
Reuters news agency reported that the Yemenia Air plane crashed early on Tuesday local time.
Comoros vice-president Idi Nadhoim told Reuters it was not known if there were any survivors.
An aviation official in Yemen's capital Sanaa told CNN the Airbus A310 was travelling from Sanaa to the capital of Comoros, Moroni, when it crashed about an hour from its destination.
The location of the crash is unknown. Comoros is made up of three islands off the east coast of Africa.
Al-Jazeera news agency reported that the plane was believed to have crashed into the ocean. It quoted a Comoran police official as saying the country had no sea rescue capabilities.
The Yemen Government owns 51 per cent of Yemenia Air and the Saudi Arabian Government 49 per cent.
Its fleet is made up of Airbus 330-200s, Airbus 310-300s and Boeing 737-800s.
