A tsunami warning has been issued for New Zealand after an earthquake struck Samoa.
The Ministry of Civil Defence said the quake, measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale struck at 06.48am New Zealand time.
The quake was centred 200 kilometres from Apia at a depth of 35 kilometres. A witness told Radio New Zealand villages on the south-east coast of Upolu had been flattened and police were moving people to higher ground.
AFP quoted a resident as saying he was going to higher ground: "I'm taking my family to a safe place. Everyone's getting out of coastal areas," Keni Lesa told the news agency.
Newstalk ZB reported that a three metre wave had hit Samoa's coast.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said sea level readings indicated that a tsunami had been generated.
"It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," it said.
The center estimated any tsunami would first hit New Zealand's East Cape at approximately 9.45am today, Wellington at 10.50am, Auckland's east coast at 11.12, and the west coast at 11.39, Lyttelton at 11.55 and Dunedin at 12.31.
New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence said that the The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had warned that the quake was likely to have generated a tsunami.
Director John Hamilton said that the Ministry has alerted New Zealand's regional Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups, Police, Fire Service, Ministry of Health, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and other government agencies, and media.
He said the ministry had activated the National Crisis Management Centre and was coordinating central government response.
Any evacuation advice will come from local authorities and local emergency services. The Ministry said people should act quickly on advice.
"If told to evacuate they should, where possible, take a radio and cellular phone with them, along with items that are essential for them such as glasses, hearing aid and medicines."
In the Samoan capital of Apia, families fled their homes amid severe shaking that lasted for up to three minutes. Local media reported people were fleeing to higher ground.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for American Samoa, Samoa, Niue, Wallis-Futuna, Tokelau, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Kermadec Islands, Fiji, Howland-Baker, Jarvis Island, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Palmyra Island, Vanuatu, Nauru, Marshall Islands and the Solomon Islands.
The centre said it was not known that any tsunami had been generated but that an earthquake of the size recorded had the potential to create a destructive tsunami.
