Personally i think for someone like you, your best way to find a job is:
- online by focusing on http://it.seek.co.nz
- approach potential employers directly (email or snail mail) and ask if they have any roles that suits your background and experience. (refer to http://jadedragon-nz.blogspot.com/ for some of the old posts that i have written on how to job hunt using yellowpages)
You probably shouldn't be looking for a sys admin role right at this stage (sys admin are usually categorized more as a level3 position). For someone like you that are starting out, you should look for role with a title similar to:
- helpdesk
- IT support
- Service desk etc
NOTE: i did a quick search on it.seek.co.nz with keyword helpdesk or support in Auckland and found more than 300 hits.
From where you are, i will personally recommend you to:
- continue to work where you are until a better job is found (so you don't get stressed financially, which will make things worst)
- check out seek on daily basis, start to pay attention for skills requirement listed for any of the roles listed above, and for any of those required skill that you don't have, work out a plan to fill the gap.
- continue with your study and certification (personally i will recommend you to focus on what's in demand on the job market rather than just randomly pick a certification and do it because someone think it's a good idea). If you really need a pointer in this area, feel free to PM and talk to me (I am certified in about 15 different IT certifications and have been working in IT in NZ for about 12 years).
- follow my yellowpages advise and start gather a list of IT companies in Auckland and put together a database (talk to baikal, he might have a list that he doesn't need anymore that you can use). Send out bulk emails/letters as last resort.
If you know what you are doing (technically not an idiot), and you do work hard in every aspect, and do speak reasonable english, it should be just the matter of time before you will find your first proper IT job in NZ (took me 6 months to find my first IT job in NZ, and most of us have been through what you are going through now). Don;t give up and you will get there. good luck.
