政府部门的中低职位薪水普遍还是很不错的,但是越往上走越觉得寒心

The fact is, how many Chinese/Asians (esp. the new migrants like us) can manage to climb up the career ladder to the high level in the government sector?
I assume those at the senior/management levels at the government sector would normally have some polticial responsibilities (for example, in terms of council, the senior/management always need to attend and report to the community board and committee meetings regarding all sorts of issues. During the meetings, he/she will be questioned by the elected representatives (Community Board members, Councillors, etc) - it should be the same for the central govt sector (say, District Health Board for the health sector? or other posts in Wellington - Members of Parliament). To deal with them successfully, this requires the job holders not just have superb communication skills (which is already difficult for us with English as a second language) but also strong "political acumen" - which is not a skill that processed by many of us who are not locals here and don't speak English as the first language....
Therefore, many of us, even working for government, can largely only remain in the technical area, which limit our potential to climb further up. |
