Bachelor of Business Studies structureThe BBS Degree is made up of:

• Papers totalling at least 360 credits
• Not more than 180 credits at 100-level; and
• At least 240 credits, including at least 75 credits at 300-level from the BBS Schedule of Papers; and
• At least 30 credits from papers outside the College of Business, in addition to any listed in the core compulsory papers, up to a maximum of 120 credits.

Core Papers

All students must take a core of papers, consisting of 120 credits, to give them a sound foundation in business. These are:

115.101 Statistics for Business
115.102 Accounting
115.103 Legal and Social Environment of Business
115.104 Principles of Marketing
115.105 Fundamentals of Finance
115.106 Economics
115.107 Management Information Systems
115.108 Organisations and Management

<B.NOTE:Please ensure you enrol for the correct (115.101) Statistics paper. Other Statistics papers (161.100, 161.120, 161.130) will not be accepted for the BBS degree.

Students should take all eight core papers in year one. However, if the preferred major requires an additional 100-level paper as a prerequisite for 200-level major papers (for instance Accountancy and Economics), it should be taken in Year One. The remaining core paper can be taken in Summer School if offered or left until year Two.

If English is your second language, then it is highly recommended you substitute the following papers for a core paper in Semesters One or Two:

192.101 English for Academic Purposes for Speakers of Other Languages
192.102 Academic Writing in English for Speakers of Other Languages

These papers will count as papers from outside the College of Business
All eight core papers are still required.

A major comprises a further 90 credits, including at least 45 credits at 300-level. Requirements for each major are accessible by clicking on the relevant major link in the Majors and endorsements section below. The remaining credits are made up of elective papers, including at least 30 credits from outside the College of Business, and the remaining 300-level credits.

Students may choose to complete their BBS with a double major. If chosen, a second major is a further 90 credits, including at least another 45 credits at 300-level. The final 45 credits are then made up of elective papers, including at least 30 credits from outside the College.

The BBS provides considerable flexibility, enabling students to take control of their own programme within the regulations. This means students can choose to follow one or more of the BBS degree’s wide variety of majors.
There is also the option to study towards a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies concurrently. The Diploma requires 120 credits at 200 and 300-level, with no more than 60 credits at 200-level. Students are able to cross-credit 45 approved 200-level credits from a completed Massey BBS to a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies, meaning that they can complete the two qualifications with a minimum of 435 credits.

BBS with a Double Major

Some students plan to complete their study programme with two majors - this can be done in two ways. Either take a double major inside the degree or study concurrently for the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies. The double major requires at least six 300-level papers in the three year programme, whereas the concurrent BBS degree and Graduate Diploma require at least nine 300-level papers in the four year programme.

A double major requires the completion of two six-paper majors (as listed above) or where there would be one paper in common between two chosen majors you choose a replacement paper of at least the same points value at the same or higher level in the same disciplinary prefix. A double major combination cannot have two or more common papers.

Concurrent Study towards a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies

Many students also study towards a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies at the same time as their BBS degree. You are able to cross-credit 45 credits at 200-level from a BBS to a GradDipBusStuds, which means that, with good planning, you can complete the two qualifications in 435 credits. This is a good way of including a second discipline area, or further broadening your business knowledge. Planning your programmeThe Bachelor of Business Studies normally involves three years of full-time study. Study may also be undertaken on a part-time basis.

First Year

You do not have to choose a major until the start of your second year. Nevertheless, many students know what they will major in when they begin BBS studies, and some of them change to another major to take advantage of a new opportunity.

During the year, usually in Semester Two, you will be given the opportunity to discuss all aspects of your advanced studies with experienced school and department staff.

Choosing Papers

When choosing papers for first year, you should consider the following:

• The BBS regulations require all students to take at least 30 credits from papers outside the College of Business, in addition to those listed in the core papers.
• Students considering majoring in Human Resource Management should think about including 175.102 Psychology as a Natural Science at some stage. Although not a part of the Human Resource Management major, it will allow students to include a valuable psychology component in their degree as one of their elective papers.
• Students considering majoring in Economics are recommended to take an introductory mathematics paper such as 160.103 Methods of Mathematics or 160.131 Mathematics for Business as well as 178.100 Principles of Macroeconomics.
• Students who have not recently attained a reasonable level in sixth form mathematics, should consider taking 160.103 Methods of Mathematics or 160.131 Mathematics for Business in year one.
• Students considering majoring in Finance should include 160.131 Mathematics for Business.
• Students considering Majoring in Business Information Systems are recommended to take a programming paper in their first year.
• Students considering majoring in Accountancy must include 110.109 Introductory Financial Accounting in their first year.

Returning Students

By the time a year of study has been completed you should be familiar with the subject areas and be able to choose a suitable major. However, if you are unsure, please talk with as many lecturers and academic advisors as possible from the department/school of your intended major.

You should plan your course of study around the papers required to complete your chosen major. Make sure that you get correct sequencing by recording prerequisite papers. Then complement these papers with a selection of electives. These should be papers which:

• interest you
• do not have timetable clashes with your other papers
• will be useful to you.
