Examination Rules
Massey University
Candidates are to adhere strictly to the following rules
Any infringement of these rules may entail the penalty of the cancellation of the candidate's examination and/or disqualification for one or more years.
1. Candidates are not permitted to enter the examination room later than forty-five (45) minutes after the beginning of the examination.
2. Candidates are not to leave the room until one hour after the commencement of the examination and then only by permission of the supervisor, who shall take in candidates' scripts. Candidates shall not leave the room during the last fifteen minutes of the examination.
3. Candidates are permitted to read the examination paper ten (10) minutes before the examination is due to commence, but must not write in their answer books or make notes until the supervisor announces that they may commence writing.
4. In the exam room:
Candidates may not bring any book or other written or printed matter or blank paper into the examination room. (This does not apply to “open book” examinations, or approved references. In the case of “open book” examinations, any written or printed material including books, acts, etc is permitted.) Rough working is to be done in the examination book or on the paper provided, and clearly crossed out.
Any annotations made by candidates on their examination question papers, (including annotations indicating a choice of answer) must be made in a manner which ensures these notations are not visible to any other candidate.
Candidate may not bring pencil-cases or wallets into the examination room. Pens, rulers, calculators, etc., may not be shared. Electronic manager/diary devices with a calculator function are not allowed. Calculators must not be in wallets.
Candidates are advised to write legibly. All answers are to be written in pen unless otherwise stated. Any handwriting, which the examiner is unable to decipher, will not be marked.
Dictionaries are not permitted in closed book examinations.
Electronic translator machines are not permitted in examinations.
5. Candidates shall not continue writing an answer, or add anything to their answers after the supervisor has announced the expiration of time.
6. Candidates shall not communicate with examiners either in their examination scripts or otherwise except through the Examinations Office, NSATS Private Bag 11222, Palmerston North.
7. Candidates shall not communicate with another in the examination room or copy from another's answers.
8. Any candidates, who, being ill at examination time, wish to be considered for aegrotat consideration (including impaired performance), must at once report the facts in writing to the Examinations Office, Private Bag 11-222, Palmerston North, obtain a medical certificate on the prescribed form, and take such other steps as the regulations demand. Refer to Page 37.
9. Candidates must write their name clearly on the outside of each answer book and also at the top of each page unless given instructions that only ID numbers are to be entered.
10. Candidates must place their identity cards in a position on their desk where they are clearly visible to the supervisor. Candidates who fail to produce a photographic ID card will be asked to confirm their identification within 24 hours – See page 4 for details. The candidate's examination answer book is not able to be presented for marking until proof of identity is confirmed.
11. Candidates are not permitted to smoke in the examination room.
12. Food must not be brought into the examination room. You may bring a clear plastic drink bottle – which may only contain water. Drink bottles are to be placed on the floor.
13. Caps or hats are not to be worn in the examination room.
14. Cell phones are to be switched off and left at the front of the room. No other forms of electronic listening and/or receiving devices are permitted into the examination room. Earplugs are not to be worn in the examination room.
15. Watch alarms must be turned off.
16. In the unlikely event that your examination room needs to be evacuated, follow the instructions issued by the Chief Supervisor in the room.

Failure to produce photo ID
You will be required to present your photo identification card within 24 hours of sitting your examination (or Monday morning where the examination is sat on a Saturday) to:

Driver Licence, Passport or any other form of photographic ID
Your examination script will not be presented for marking until proof of identity has been confirmed.
Calculators in exams
The use of calculators is only permitted where indicated in the requirements column of the Exam Details Section of this booklet. Under no circumstances may you share a calculator with any other candidate. No electronic manager/diary devices with calculator functions are allowed.
Calculators must not be in wallets. Refer to Examination Rules on Page 2.
Key to Calculator Restrictions:
CP Calculators are permitted.
CP1 Non-programmable calculators only are permitted.
CP2 Those calculators with alphanumeric keypads and/or alphanumeric memory and/or can store and display text are not permitted, memories must be cleared.
CP3 Calculators or computers with full alphanumeric keyboards or screens that can display more than four lines of text are not permitted.
CP4 Restricted Calculator Policy applies. (In this case candidate may bring calculators into an examination room, but only of a type approved by the respective Department. Candidates will have been provided with such details by the Department concerned.)
CP5 Memory of programmable calculators must be cleared.
CP6 Only calculators with non-alphanumeric keyboards are permitted.
Scantron Cards
If you are required to answer all or part of your examination on a scantron card, please ensure you are familiar with the following instructions well in advance of your examination.
Use a 2B or 3B pencil – preferably one that is not sharp. It is easier to make readable marks when the pencil is slightly blunt.
Do not write anything above the NAME line, or mark the card in any area except where indicated.
Do not hole-punch or staple the card in any way. The card must not be attached to the script book or other document. The cards will be collected separately.
You should use the 10 minutes reading time to complete the student and paper details as follows:
NAME, SUB JEC T, PAPER NUMBER and DATE at the top of SIDE 1
Write your ID number in the boxes provided and mark the corresponding number in the grid below.
TEST VERSION - always mark A unless indicated otherwise.
Ensure that the marks are clear and dark, as light marks may not read and are recorded as if the response was omitted.
When the supervisor announces that you may commence writing your answers:
Use a heavy horizontal line to make your selection. Completely fill the rectangle for the appropriate letter.
Do not use a tick, vertical line, dot or circle to mark your answer.
Erase any changes made. Smudged marks will read as a multiple response and will be marked as incorrect.
Aegrotat/Impared Performance Applications
You may apply for Aegrotat/Impaired Performance consideration if illness, injury or bereavement prevents you from attending, or seriously impairs your performance in an examination. Use one form only for all applications. Both you and your doctor/ counsellor will be required to complete the application form. Aegrotat/Impaired Performance Consideration forms are available from:

Do not send in an application for Aegrotat/Impaired Performance consideration after you have received your examination results, as it will not be considered .
Examination Results
Examination results can be accessed from the Web as soon as they come available on the Massey Home Page www.massey.ac.nz. Results accessed from the Web are not official until you have received your exam results notification card in the mail. You will be required to use your PIN number. If you have lost your PIN number, please ring 0800 MASSEY (0800 627 739) to request a new PIN number.
Results are posted approximately 18 December. Unfortunately examination results cannot be given over the phone.

Combined Results Pass
In some Applied Science, Technology and Bachelor of Social Work degrees, provision has been made for a ‘ Combined Results Pass '. Passes of this nature are granted by the Academic Board in cases where candidates have narrowly failed a subject and performed well in other subjects of the examination. Such passes are normally advised with result cards. The University does not accept applications for a ‘ Combined Results Pass '.
Reconsideration of Examination Scripts
You may have your script reconsidered by the examiners by making a written application within four weeks of receiving your result in the mail and on payment of the prescribed fee. You will be advised of details on the information sheet sent with your final results card.
Return of Scripts
You may request a copy of the final examination script to be returned to you. It will not be possible to request a copy of your script where the examination is Total Recovery or involves the use of a Scantron card. You will receive further information with exam results.
Carry Forward of Course Work (CFCW)
Should you wish to make an application for Carry Forward of Course Work (CFCW) in any of your failing subjects, application forms may be obtained from:

Exemption from Practical Classes
Where a paper has been failed and exemption from practical classes is desired, in re-attempting the paper, applicants must seek the advice of the Academic Unit Head concerned.
Copies of Academic Records and Certificates of Attainment
Academic Records lists all papers and grades for papers in which you have enrolled and states eligibility to graduate where applicable. A fee of $12 will apply, plus $1.50 for each additional copy and an additional $2 if posting overseas.
Certificate of Attainment states your eligibility to graduate when you have completed a qualification. A fee of $6 will apply, plus $1.50 for each additional copy and an additional $2 if posting overseas
