If you haven't been to Hong Kong, you may or may not like there.
It is very crowded, hot and humid, thou it is very handy and got a much better metropolitian feel than here in Auckland. You can easily to get your daily needs downstairs and shopping malls are everywhere. Foods are superb and cheap.
Many Hong Kong people now can speak some Mandarin, thou not all of them speak it well - forget about the northern accent and special vocab/words you use/see on websites in mainland China, it is simply a foreign language for them...~
As stated by Baby G, a new graduate could earn less than 10K, with lucky one with 15K-20K - so 30K is really not that bad.
It also depends on which area do you live but Accommodation and Transport are the two major expenses for you there....if your company provides some supports on the accommodation, then it is largely sorted. However, there is no spaciousness there as most of people there only live in tiny flats.
There are only 2 free TV channels, TVB and ATV, both are purely Cantonese channels and their programmes could be pretty crap (esp the TVB ones). Also don't expect you can watch the "Spring Festival Night Party Show" by CCTV on TV there on the Chinese New Year eve becos it is simply NOT shown there at all.:) Also, many Hong Kong people dont seem to be interested in/be bothered of the pop TV, songs, movies, stars who are popular in mainland/hot topics in mainland China so you may not find a common topic to talk to your HK colleagues because they simply dont know what you are talking about - as such, you may find it a bit hard to "get into" the mainsteam HK society (just like you may not have a common topic to talk with your kiwi colleauges?)....
Other than $$$, ask yourself first, do you think you would enjoy this sort of lifestyle ? |
