Just my curiosity, if your business expenses are only more than $3k, how can you get $3,400 tax refund? Assume it's personal tax refund and you're at highest personal tax rate(38%), your refund should be 38% x business loss($3k)=$1k(approx).

It depends on what type of business you are running.

Certain businesses have their advantages than others.

Generally "home based" businesses shares your living space for business activities, so you can claim some personal expenses as part of business expense.

NZ has a favourable tax systems that encourage ordinary people to start their own business, hence allowing these tax advantages.

However, all businesses must demonstrate the attempt to build, progress and make money. You just can't just have a hollow business and claim tax benefits.

For all that are interested in tax returns using a business vehicle, I suggest you play by the book, and genuinely start a proper business.

Type of businesses:
1) start your own - can be costly, and high chance of failure, not suitable for the light hearted
2) franchise business - good income stream, less chance of failure, but costly to start one
3) network marketing - very low cost, and is suitable for a lot of people, patience and determination is required

Read rich dad poor dad series to get to know these 3.

Thank you for all the stuff. So I think your expenses in tax return may be more than $10K rather than only $3k. You just randomly wrote a figure in this forum.

Be careful on what you said re running a genuine business as you need to prove your genuineness when IRD come to question.

yes, my "expenses" are more than $10,000, and of course I can justify that with IRD when the time comes, other wise my accountant would not have filed it.

Have I spent $10,000 on the business alone? No, and I'm not going into the details here.

These are the key words. You must spend $10k on business alone otherwise you can't claim, and you must not play the book.

You'll get IRD investigation.

hey thanks for reminding me mate.

I personally don't have high regard for IRD, possibly because of all the brain washing from all the Robert Kiyosaki books, and from Donald Trump too.

I treat my business as business and I do everything possible to conform to the law. I have responsibilities to my family and I wil not jepatice my reputation.

However, this country is not china, hence I prefer to be honest, and yes I do dislike governments in general, because they are basically useless in dealing with the free world economy, health care, education, and my personal wellbeing.

I think I have talked too much.

For those who is interested in your future, your retirement, whether the government is going to look after you, please reed The America We Deserve, by Donald Trump. What happens in US also applies to NZ.

It's an illegal practice as there is tax avoidence regime in NZ tax law.

看了几位激烈的讨论，我觉的说的都有道理。生意起步时都会有些难处，退些税回来如果能在财政上帮到lz的生活，那我为你高兴。真心希望你能坚持下去做好你的genuine business，为国家多创造利税。我想你做生意并非就想合理的避那么点税吧：）以为我觉的真正的成功生意是双赢。另外我同意另位高人的见解，合理避税和逃税是有本质区别的。这是一种选择，不取决于你的商业能力，而在于你做人的原则。会计与审计也有舞弊的时候，毕竟你是他们的客户。安达信就是这么做臭然后灭亡的：）。
