i really like this topic LaLa
in my opinion, "worldliness" is the result of poor education. by education, i rather mean social values embedied in individual citizens than knowledge in any field. social value embraces a range of qualities such as contemporary economic, cultural, spiritual, political values etc etc.
sadly, china is not very good at these most important things. we too often focus on the wrong thing! while the media is supposed to promote positive social value, moral and education, it's now fostering "stupidity". thats why this people-driven media-influenced society is nuturing such a large group of people who praise "worldliness". sad. its crucial for the media and also govt to get their visions right because lacking of vision doesnt make us go anywhere.
many may say that our rights of being classy are confined by our economy, which to some extent i think is true, but its important to know that the sense of classy can also be displayed through our personal qualities. we dont need wealth to be classy, as they are just outward attributes seen by man, but generosity, humility, integrity, kindness, hospitality etc these are all the basis of being "true classy". on the other hand, we need to have a burden of helping the countries to escape from proverty. in the dinner conversation with my gf we just talked about "proverty shall not exist in civilization". so the more abilities, the heavier the burden.
while many views held by our parent(previous) generation are still valid, many of them are dated and require redefinition. it's simply our job to adapt between the old and the new which means we have the willingness to embrace the new as well as preserving the old. Big mission! i personally prefer mustical concert than our traditional chinese opera, but i do want to see cultural diversity in place rather than cultural extinction. any traditional cultures ought to be preserved as much as we can.
some say many people may not appreciate chinese opera or tea culture, but in my opinion it just needs some nicer wrappers -- smart marketing strategies. in this case, media certainly has an important role to play. as someone mentioned ironically, "the market is controlled by a small group of people, and few of them really care about aesthetic value while the majority persues purely the lofty economic benefit." it would be nice if this category of people can balance both important values.
in conclusion, media is controlled and has control. most of us are being fooled around by media. hehe. |
