相信这里的大多数人来奥大读书，唯一不可避免的课程就是Math了，因为它存在于我们生活的每一个角落。学会使用数学工具，不但能够提高抽象思维和逻辑推理能力，还能帮助我们通过计算，测量，统计并进行总结和观察身边发生的一切。总之数学无可争议的就是表达人类尝试理解自然界的工具。

嗯，那么Math的广告就到此为止，现在来说说Math课程的设置。
Math在奥大基本可以分成两类，理论数学(pure math)和应用数学(applied math)

Pure math的分支有 algebra(代数), analysis(分析), logic(逻辑).
分别对应课程:
algebra : 255, 326, 328, 320
analysis: 332,333
logic: 315

纯数学的实用性没有应用数学那么强，对于外行人来说会感觉研究这些东西完全就是在钻牛角尖的感觉，对于内行人来说要么功成名就，否则就是虚度光阴，总之精神上的补充大于物质上的，学纯数的如果不是特别牛的人，最好把它作为兴趣，不要指望它能带给你更好的job perspective, 可以这么说,任何没有现实中使用意义的数学都可归类为纯数学. 学conjoint的同学可以考虑pure math

Applied Math:
对于想把数学作为将来的job,应用数学是最适合的, 它和纯数学相反,研究的是如何应用数学知识到其他范畴,比如金融,密码,计算机等等.
相对应的课程有:
260, 361, 362 , 363

任何在real life中有实践意义的数学，都可归类为应用数学。(没错,密码学是应用数学,纯数的同学不要闹,抗议无效) (-_-;)
对于学习appiled的同学，建议361,362,363一个都不要剩下,这些都是基础中的基础

OK, 说了这么多, 毕业了，我该怎么办？
-- 很好的问题,数学的确不如商科,工科,甚至一些science课容易找工作,但是不代表没有数学的工作, 特殊领域上数学家还是很sought after

比如
Government Departments
CCAnalystsQualifications in mathematics, statistics, operation research or economics.
Defence Technology Agency (DTA)Scientist/AnalystA university degree in fields requiring good mathematical and modelling skills, for example, physics, engineering, mathematics, chemistry or operational research.
Defence Technology AgencyScientist/AnalystAt least a master degree in fields requiring good mathematical and modelling skills, for example, physics, engineering, mathematics, chemistry or operational research.
Government Communications Security BureauCommunication Systems AnalystAchieved excellence at tertiary level in computer science, electronic engineering or mathematics.  A basic knowledge of cryptography and statistics would be an advantage.
Government Communications Security BureauMathematicianAchieved excellence at tertiary level with a mathematics degree (preferably postgraduate).  Knowledge of cryptography , computer networks or digital communications would be an asset.
Land Transport Safety Authority of New ZealandEconomic AnalystPostgraduate degree in economics with a strong background in at least one of the areas of econometrics, statistics and mathematics.
Ministry of EducationResearch AnalystsExperience in statistical analysis, investigation and trend reporting activities.
Ministry of FisheriesRegional Intelligence AnalystTertiary qualification, preferably with a statistical and/or information analysis focus.
Ministry of HealthIntelligence AnalystHave a flair for analytical, research, and statistical type activities.

Industry and Commerce
Meteorological Service of NZTrainee MeteorologistsBSc, BSc(Hons) or MSc in mathematics or physics.
OrionNetwork Investment AnalystA university degree that includes economics, maths and physics.
Pacific Edge Biotechnology LtdBioinformatician/Computational BiologistA recent degree with relevant biological, mathematical or information and computer science focus.
Rodgers & Partners Consultants LtdBusiness AnalystAppropriate qualification in mathematics, finance, engineering or science.

这些只是冰山一角，需要数学的工作还有很多很多，在这里希望并祝福每一位math major的同学，能顺利毕业，找到理想的工作

你这是胡扯呢吗，按你的理论，那么纯数学的所有方法都被应用数学用了，所以纯数学也是应用数学，由此我们得到了一个矛盾。所以一开始你的假设就是错的。数学可以分为应用和理论，但是不是按照你这么分的，计算机的之父冯诺伊曼是个理论数学家出身，最初的计算机只是个MODEL，或者说是几张图型。
Enigma是谢尔比乌斯这个发明家所发明的，那发明家也是应用数学家吗！
图灵机呢，那完全就是属于集合的范围，与应用数学毫无关系。
对于你说的那些个361，362，363那都是被工程数学，是解决在工程建设中遇到的数学问题。
理论数学在经济学上的应用是极其广泛的，工程数学连边都沾不上。所以也可以说根本就没有什么应用数学之说，一些数学方法和模型被人们广泛应用到了实际生产中就能说是是引用数学了？那你去问问ADAM SMITH和JOHN NASH他们承认有所谓的应用数学之说吗？
建议你多看看一些数学杂志，就知道“应用数学”有多么可笑了。
说学数学，物理，化学的人找不到工作的人一般都是文科或者没上过大学的，ASB的CEO就是奥大物理系量子物理出身的。

发自内心的佩服7楼的无知，工程的转经济，你是在用脚后跟思考问题吗。NASH可是从来没有搞过经济，是他的理论被人用到经济上的。估计你家里没有一个人成才的，所以你才会这么无知和愚蠢，你是不是连算曲线下面面积使用INTEGRATION还是DIFFERENTIATION都不知道啊。
现在奥大混的留学垃圾太多了，3年都无法正常毕业，要不然就是那些学文科的丝毫没有前途的愚昧学生，看到那群问学数学有什么用的低能儿就恶心，中国人的名声就是被你们给败坏的，连奖学金都没有的人永远会被别人踩在脚下，永世不得翻身。唉，留学垃圾太多了都把风气弄混了，别等到教授问你ODE和PDE的区别都不知道的时候就傻逼了。一群垃圾学生！

你的逻辑似乎不太好，而且您举得例子能看出您不是数学这行的人。关于理论数学的定义，我们来狗一狗看看

你的思维给我的感觉就是挺乱的。人类研究自然科学需要对其进行细分，归纳并通过经验进行总结，自然科学里面你中有我，我中有你，但并不是说你就是我，我就是你。我们中国人不是一个喜欢细分的民族，吃饭烧菜都是讲究一锅炖，哲学都是讲究天人合一，你就是个典型。

没错，没有人否认应用数学是源于理论数学的发展，但是任何理论数学的application 都定义为应用数学
theoretical computer science 已经是应用数学的分支了，这点您还要强辩么？

到底你是想否认应用数学的地位呢还是否定楼主对于应用数学的解释？一方面承认数学有应用和理论之分，一方面又否认应用数学的地位，
您自己搞清楚自己在说什么了嘛？  既然数学可以分为应用和理论，所以应用理所当然的就是数学的一部分，
那么您的原话"就知道“应用数学”有多么可笑了" 是不是可以改成"就知道一部分数学有多么可笑了"
从您的这些话里我看不出数学有多可笑，但是您绝对可笑

回复楼主,我根据你给的连接,找了个国防部的网站进去,觉得你说的话很不切实际,先不说那些senior的职业对学历专业的要求,不是maths本科毕业完就可以申请的,哪怕是你列出的那个 industry and commerce的表格内,那些职位,你光学maths有用吗.
因为那些工作并不是纯maths的工作.比如Bioinformatcian,奥大有这个专门的Bioinformatic专业,你学maths比学Bioinformatic的更适合做Bioinformatcian这个职位吗?

有句老话,所有理科的基础都建立在数学上,难道你光学数学就能做一切理科的工作吗?
一句话结尾,数学这个专业在实际找工作中的应用比stats还差,学校已经那么多人在学stats的post了,如果好找工作,怎么还那么多人学呢?

哈哈，学pure math的人从来是瞧不起applied 的东西的。。。。。。
基本同意12楼的观点，单纯学math 无论是pure 还是applied 都是比较难找工作的，最好的出路也就是去当个数学老师了。建议不要单纯就学一个math Major ，对math超有兴趣的math天才除外。
发现一个有趣的现象，学stats post的人很多都不是undergraduate就学stats的，而是从其他专业转来的。问其原因，答曰：简单。哈哈，stats的post 确实比什么comsci ，math的要简单很多。。。没办法，奥大的stats都是applied的东西，很少theoretical的paper了。。。。很多教theoretical的老师都走了。。。奥大在堕落啊。。。

数学是很有用的，现在各行业都需要数学模型，就算是纯数学也很有用
