Police hunt hit-and-run driver

Police are hunting the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 42 year-old mother of two on her bicycle.

The woman was hit by a car as she was cycling through the intersection of Marshs and Springs Road, Prebbleton, between 7am and 7.15am today.

The driver failed to stop and police are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Sergeant Anderson of the Christchurch South Police said the head woman was the mother of two primary school children from Prebbleton.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that she has been struck by a vehicle and the driver would be well aware they had hit something," Anderson said.

The woman's family has been advised but police have not released her name as she has yet to be formally identified.

Police are appealing for witnesses, and also for the driver of the vehicle involved to come forward.

Any witnesses to this crash can contact Christchurch South Police Station on 03 3632-500.

The accident is the third hit-and-run case in the South Island this month.
