This information is presented in the Halswell area where the Council has appointed contractors to reinstate its water, waste water and roading infrastructure. Some of the information shown here may also apply to neighbouring areas.

Remediation of land and Council infrastructure worksInformation about land remediation and major Council infrastructure work will be posted here as soon as it becomes available.Wastewater (washing and sewage)The Council is working to restore full sewage service after the earthquake.  Damage to the wastewater infrastructure has been substantial in some areas and aftershocks are causing ongoing damage in some areas where the system is already fragile.
The Council is communicating directly with residents whose service has been affected.
If your property's drainage or toilets are not functioning properly then it is possible you have problems with pipes from your house to the Council’s stormwater and wastewater networks.  If this is the case, you should contact a registered drainlayer
Indicators of stormwater or wastewater damage include slow flushing toilets, earth movement or cracks around wastewater drains, overflowing sumps (the open space that collects undesirable liquids) or unpleasant smells.  Registered drainlayers or certified competent wastewater service providers can offer advice.
If there has been a sewage spill onto your property, this presents a health risk and the Council can arrange to clean it up and disinfect the area.
Please contact the Council's call centre on 941 8999 if your street has restricted or no service and you have not heard from us, or if there is a sewage spill onto your property.

Access to rivers and waterwaysThere is currently no discharge of sewage directly into rivers or streams.
Environment Canterbury water quality monitoring shows that water quality in earthquake affected rivers and estuaries has now returned to pre-earthquake levels.
However, the risk to water quality and public health is still higher following significant rainfall and people should avoid contact with all waterways for 48 hours after heavy rainfall as rainfall can wash contamination seeping from damaged sewers into waterways.
Environment Canterbury’s routine water quality testing results are available on its website.

Water supplyWe believe that the Council’s water supply is available to all houses and can be used for drinking. If you have not been in your house since the earthquake and you need drinking water, for health reasons we ask that you run all taps in the house for five minutes to flush the system before drinking the water.
Contact the Council's customer call centre on 941 8999 if you are without water.

Silt collectionSilt and sand removed from properties should be disposed of at EcoDepots. Keep receipts and photos to include in your EQC/private insurance claim.

Transport and Roads30km per hour speed restrictions are in place in some areas to slow traffic on damaged roads and to prevent further damage to adjacent properties.

Kerbside collection and rubbleRubbish and recycling are being collected as usual.
No masonry or other earthquake rubble should be put in rubbish bins. This material should be taken to an EcoDepot (Parkhouse Road, Metro Place or Styx Mill Road). Keep receipts to include as part of your insurance claim.
