Twenty two-year-old barman Jaime Gilbert was one of the first casualties of the Christchurch earthquake to be officially named by police.

His family didn't need the confirmation, Jaime's sister Amy was with him when he died; in fact, the brother and sister were holding hands.

It's one of the rawest images from the aftermath of Tuesday's earthquake; Amy Cooney, bleeding, dazed and calling for her brother Jaime Gilbert.

They had both run from the bar they had been working in; as the building collapsed on them he used his body to protect her.

“Strangely enough we still managed to hold hands, under the rubble and I was knocked out and as I came round the first thing I could feel was I still had my bro's hand,” Amy says.

“And I think was the one thing that stopped me from panicking and totally losing the plot was that I still had my bro's hand.”

But when Jaime was pulled from the rubble he was barely clinging to life, and despite desperate attempts to resuscitate him, Jaime Gilbert was pronounced dead at Christchurch Hospital.

Amy says her brother saved her life by trying to shield her.

“I'd say so, most definitely, that was his intention anyway,” she says. “He was always very, very giving. The most giving boy, he would have sacrificed anything for anyone.”

Last night Jaime was brought home.

His mum Vicki first gave Jaime his nickname, Jim Jam.

Jaime loved to perform; three years ago he starred at the National Academy of Singing and Dance.

Jaime Gilbert was also a dad, to two-year-old Levi and six-month-old India-Rose; a selfless man from a selfless family who feel for those still waiting to hear about their loved ones.

“When we think of the other folks in Christchurch who don't know yet, our hearts really go out to them,” says Jaime’s father Robert. “We have our Jaime back now and we're thankful for that.”

Jaime will be buried on Tuesday.

太难受了!挺佩服他们家人看起来还条理清晰,挺冷静的。中国家长可能悲痛的都活不下去了,更别提接受采访了。。。
