A symbol of hope
Christchurch's night sky will be lit by beams of light to help fill the city's "dark heart" and remind residents that their future is bright.
The White Lights of Hope project will feature two lights beaming into the night sky from a rooftop in Cathedral Square to mark the first anniversary of the September 4 earthquake. The lights will be visible from around the city.
The project was inspired by New York's annual Tribute in Light, held in remembrance of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Organiser Janine Morrell-Gunn, of Whitebait-TV, said the project was a gift to Christchurch to let residents know they were not alone.
"I feel our future looks very exciting with the new city plan, and I think now we need a little symbol of hope," she said.
The lights would be turned on after a blessing ceremony by Christ Church Cathedral Dean Peter Beck in Cathedral Square at 6.45pm on September 4 and would shine every night until February 23.
People around the country would be encouraged to show their solidarity with Christchurch by going into their street at 7pm, after the ceremony, and shining torches into the night sky.
Morrell-Gunn said the idea had been embraced by many people.
She had worked with the city council and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority to make it a reality.
The lights would be installed on top the seven-storey Telecom building today and would be tested on Monday by the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure they were not in breach of flight paths.
"They've said they'll make it work. Everyone's been fabulous," she said.
The project had been paid for by Westpac, she said.
