NZ New cars are generally more expensive, but most of them would have a service history of some sort, and you would be able to check if there were any serious accidents, etc. Most cars now (Even the cheapest Japanese-brand new car Suzuki Alto selling at $17k has curtain airbags as standard.
The letdown on NZ new cars is that they can be seriously stripped on the equipments, black door handles, mirrors, no Sunroof or leather for entry models, lack of choices for colours, etc.
Japanese imports offers more choices in spec, colours and models at cheaper price -
You can buy models which are never sold as NZ new - such as Honda Stream, Toyota Wish, Nissan Elgrand etc.But most of these cars do not have service history and it is difficult to check on whether there are any accidents and if its sold as a wreck car - Moreover, most (If not all) of Japanese imported cars within the $30k bracket would only come with 2 airbags and no VSA - In case of a serious accident, there is a lower chance of survival.
Depends on what sort of buyer you are,
If you want something cheap, Jap Import
