The Chinese Consulate has chartered two helicopters to fly out more than 100 Chinese tourists from the quake sticken Kaikoura area.
As many as 130 Chinese citizens were stuck in the township after the earthquake and aftershocks closed roads and access into and out of the Kaikoura District.
As many as 50 flights were made to extract the tourists'.
One Chinese citizen told Newshub he found the experience exciting.
"[I'm] really glad to be back," he says.
"It's not bad because we were all together. It's really nice to be back."
Another citizen Doreen Wu said she found the whole experience horrible.
"It was horrible to stay in there," she says.
"I want to thank everyone, [the Kaikoura community] were all nice, they helped us a lot."
Ms Wu says a majority of the tourists were staying in a motel when the quake hit, which forced them to move to their rental cars for safety.
The flights were all paid for on behalf of the Chinese government.
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake stuck Canterbury at 12:02am on Monday morning killing at least two people.
