To import a car from Japan to New Zealand, you must meet the import regulations, including biosecurity and safety standards, and provide necessary documentation such as the Bill of Sale, export certificate, and proof of ownership. After the car arrives, it will need to go through a border inspection, biosecurity clearance, and an entry certification process before it can be registered and licensed for use on NZ roads. Be aware of potential costs, including shipping, duties, and taxes, and consider using a shipping agent or customs broker to assist with the process.
Before you ship
Check import eligibility: Newer cars (less than 20 years old) must meet specific emissions and safety standards, including having Electronic Slip Control (ESC). Older cars (over 20 years old) are generally exempt from emissions and safety regulations.
Gather necessary documents: You will need a Bill of Sale, proof of ownership, the Japanese export certificate, and a VIN certificate.
Arrange biosecurity: The vehicle must be clean of all biosecurity contamination to be allowed into New Zealand. Some vehicles may require offshore cleaning or treatment.
Consider using a shipping agent: A shipping agent or customs broker can help navigate the complex regulations and paperwork.
During the import process
Ship the car: Arrange for the vehicle to be shipped from a port in Japan to New Zealand.
Clear customs: New Zealand Customs will assess duties and GST. You will only pay these if the shipment value is over NZ$1,000.
Complete biosecurity clearance: The vehicle will be inspected for biosecurity risks by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
Complete entry certification: The vehicle must be inspected by an Approved Inspection Organisation to ensure it meets New Zealand's standards. Any necessary repairs identified during this inspection must be completed.
Pay clean car fees: You may need to pay a charge or receive a credit under the Clean Car Standard (CCS).
After arrival
Register and license the vehicle: Once the car is certified, you can register and license it for road use.
Get a Warrant of Fitness (WoF): Before you can register it, the vehicle must pass a WoF inspection to prove it is roadworthy.
