Subject : any novalac formula users or constipation issues?
I have just weened my 6mth old son from breastmilk onto formula. He had already started solids and was having trouble with constipation, I was using coloxyl drops which was helping. The only reason I weened him was because I am going back to work 2 nights a week and couldn't express enough milk. I was using s26 but the constipation got worse to the point he was screaming when trying to use his bowels. I now have novalac formula designed for infants with constipation but there is not much information on it, I am hesitant to change formulas or to use one I haven't heard of before. Any one using it or any constipation ideas?

Hello,
My son has suffered with constipation since i weaned him off the breast at 3 weeks old. I had contiuous issues with BFing that i couldnt cope with.
I used S26 Gold and that caused constipation. So i then moved onto Karicare Gold Plus which has an ingredient in it that helps with babies bowel movements. That ingredient is called Prebiotics.
As for the Novalac formula, i have never tried it. The coloxyl drops are brilliant. They work a charm with DS. The other thing you could try is infants friend. That also works.
My son still suffers from constipation every now and then. He has just started on Farex though so that may be why.
HTH!

My son was 6wks prem and the Neonatal Unit used S-26 Gold, we stayed in there for 11 days being discharged at 35wks4days. When I came home I bought the same formula from the supermarket.
We were back in the hospital 11 days later with really bad constipation (poos were like hard marbles). I was then prescribed LACTULOSE of which I give him 5mls twice a day and I was to switch to Novalac Constipation formula.
I found the formula helped alot and his bowels are now soft and he doesn't push anymore with NO results.
My son came off this constipation formula 2 wks ago at 7 wks old, and we are just using plain S-26 (not GOLD!!) and the Lactulose which I am to wean him off over the next 3 months.
All the best
Kim

When I put my son onto S26 Gold (at 3mnths) he was a bit constipated also. What worked for him was a teaspoon of brown sugar in every bottle or every so often when needed. This was on the advice of a paediatrician and my mother ;)
Hope this helps,
Emma

Hi, my little boy was also suffering constipation when I changed from breast to bottle at 2 weeks. I'm not one for using medication. However if I had to I would.
I have replaced one of his bottles with cooled boiled water and this has worked wonders. Luckily he drinks it with no problems.
He has gone from hard clay like stools (poo) that had a bit of blood in them, to nice soft stools. He was haveing bottles nearly 2-3 hours apart, I came to the conclusion he was just thirsty and maybe dehydrated hence the constipatation. Its upsetting to see them in pain. Goodluck Karen.

Lactulose is a prescription medication. It's very sweet (sugar/water mix) but gentle on the stomach. Your doctor will be able to prescribe it for you. My son is now on S26 (not the gold one) which is whey based. Here in NZ SMA is a casein based formula which has the tendency to constipate my paed told me.
My paed said I can't give my son brown sugar as he was prem and his system can't handle it.
Hope this is of help!!

Try diluting prune juice into his formula or solids.....I did this for my bub and it worked a treat...I just added 1/2 teaspoon 100% prune juice and 1/2 teason cooled boiled water to his apple puree and the results were instant...

Subject : Is Nan HA really the best?
Just curious, I have bought this formula ready for baby and I want to make sure it is the best one to use. I used Karicare gold with my DS. Thanks Bec

I don't think that there is really a formula which is "best" to use. Every baby is different and each one reacts differently to certain formulas. I used Karicare with my DD, but I tried it with my DS and he suffered from constipation with it. He has S26 now. However, a friend of mine can't feed her baby S26 cos she chucks it straight back up. She has her baby on a Heinz one. I think it is just a matter of trial and error as to which one is the best for your baby.

I agree it is up to the individual baby. My baby was on s 26 to start with and he would scream and throw up. He is on nan gold now and doesn't scream and we hardly ever have a vomit. I know mums who have their children on s 26 and it's fine.

With my DS i started using S26 because that is what the hospital used. I found that he was very chucky and changed his formula to Nan 1HA gold to see if it made any difference. He did not seem to notice i had changed his formula and he stopped chucking so much. I would recommended it.

Nan HA gold is the most closest to breast milk and is easily digestible. That is what my youngest is on now but with my oldest son he was on S26 and he became constipated so i switched him to Heinz. So it is basically trial and error and a question of what YOU want to do and in some circumstances afford.
I almost died at the prices of formula now, how much a price can change in a few years. i pay almost 22.00 for the tin of formula :S

Like PP said "It's a trial & error thing" which can be a pain especially when formulas aren't coming cheap.
With my first son he was put on NAN by his PED & well, he did nothing but vomit majority of it all back up. At around 2 months the vomiting stopped & our son just piled on the weight.
Our newest addition was placed onto S26 Gold at 2 weeks as a 'top up' however at 5 weeks I stopped breastfeeding all together & just stuck with the formula, we haven't had a problem with the brand.
