In a first for Hamilton, the New Zealand senior men's volleyball team is to take on the Sichuan team from China in a test match.

The match is being played at the new Hamilton Boys High Gymnasium, home of the Pistons basketball team and is the 2nd Test in a four-Test series. (Other matches in Tauranga, North Harbour and Auckland).

Sichuan is a professional team, playing in China's top league, and contains two members of the country's 2008 Olympic team.

The game will be a 'David vs Goliath' contest, with the Sichuan team being the strongest men's team ever to visit these shores. All its players are professionals, while the entire New Zealand team are amateurs, and have been assembled from around the country just for this series. The local players are nevertheless known for their athleticism and hard-hitting, and will be providing a competitive spectacle.

China is currently ranked 11th for men in World indoor volleyball rankings, while New Zealand last finished 15th at the Asian Championships in 2005, when China finished 2nd. [Note: New Zealand fares better in Beach Volleyball, where our top men's combination ranks inside the top 20 for the Olympic qualification process].

Tickets for the match are being sold at the door only, with door sales commencing at 6pm. [Adults $5, School students $2]
