A car safety system which could save dozens of lives will soon become compulsory for all new cars.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC), an anti-skid system, has been hailed by road safety experts for its ability to reduce loss of traction on the road and help to minimise loss of control.

A new law will be phased in over a six year period and will apply to all new and used vehicles imported into New Zealand by 2020, however new vehicles are proposed to comply from July next year.

Motor Trade Association (MTA) spokesperson Ian Stronach says the decision to make ESC mandatory follows many other countries and has the potential to reduce accidents and save lives.

Mr Stronach says the staggered approach in introducing the safety feature is pragmatic and sensible.

"By providing a timetable for introduction up front, Government will allow the industry plenty of time to prepare and make the necessary changes," he says.

Some vehicles, such as specialist or vintage cars, will not need to comply with the new ESC rule.

Public consultation opens on the draft rule in early March.
