Seismologists have confirmed earthquake aftershocks are slowly shifting away from Christchurch, easing the risk of any more sharp shakes across the city in coming days and weeks.

In some much-needed good news, earthquake specialists say they are confident the latest round of aftershocks set off by violent twin shakes two days before Christmas is moving east offshore.

The region has been hit by dozens of shakes in the last 10 days, but Dr Kelvin Berryman from GNS Science says the trend offshore will limit the risk of severe building damage or more liquefaction.

Quakes in the last 24 hours were centred in Pegasus Bay, and would likely re-energise more faults in the surrounding area, but the impact would be limited, Dr Berryman told Radio New Zealand.

"Aftershocks in this sequence will continue out there offshore for weeks if not tailing away over months," he said.

"But any further activity in the Canterbury region is likely to be further from the city. I think that's the positive view looking forward."

He also confirmed the risk of a tsunami was low as the quakes moved to sea.

Modelling completed last year in collaboration with NIWA showed a quake would need to be larger than the 7.1-magnitude shake of September 2010 if it was to generate a dangerous sea surge.

Meanwhile, the latest spate of shakes has set residents on edge, with some in orange-zoned Avonside fearing this week's tremors will delay property assessments.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority head Roger Sutton stepped in on Tuesday to reassure locals that the assessments would be finalised in February as planned.

Counsellor John McEwan urged stressed locals to work with new techniques to keep calm in the face of ongoing tremors.
He recommended increasing daily exercise, cutting back on alcohol and trying to get as much sleep as possible to help relax.
