Highlands Motorsport Park set to dazzle in Cromwell

The construction of a 4.8km international-standard circuit is under way near Cromwell and is shaping up to be one of Australasia’s most advanced race tracks.

This $20 million project – scheduled for completion in 2013 - is being bankrolled by Queensland’s Tony Quinn, owner of VIP Petfoods.

“The initial idea was from a group of guys who bought the land off the council and spent seven years getting the resource consent,” said Quinn. “I was approached to become a shareholder and then bought the whole place, with a promise to the original founders that I would build it.”

Although Highlands Motorsport Park will be one of New Zealand’s premier tracks, it is not the intention to poach events from neighbouring raceways in Ruapuna, Timaru and Teretonga.

“The primary purpose of the track is to be a private motorsport facility and will also be used for corporate product launches and vehicle testing etc. We are planning two iconic racing events a year, with one overseas event, starting with the Australian GT.”

The track can be divided into three separate circuits, making it ideal for corporate or driver training events.

Its design contains all the trappings of an international racetrack, featuring unruly corners, chicanes, undulations and a foray into ‘the forest’.

“The track will also include a motorsport car museum, a kart track, a mini-putt course in the shape of Bathurst, a restaurant, industrial sections, skid pan, hot laps and much more!”

Cromwell’s stable weather is ideal for racing and Quinn says he can’t wait for the track to be in action.

“Cromwell is a beautiful location and easily accessible – it’s on the main highway and only one hour from Queenstown International Airport.”
