As outlined in an email to you yesterday, a University of Canterbury commerce student has been confirmed as having measles.
Measles is a highly contagious disease, but the disease is vaccine preventable so if you are fully vaccinated for measles, you are very unlikely to acquire this infection.
Staff and students are reminded that if you believe you are sick with measles then you should seek medical advice from your family GP or the UC Health Centre. If measles is confirmed you should stay at home. It is important that you avoid group and social activities, sports and recreation events, and public places. This will help to break the chain of transmission which this virus relies upon.
Immunisation is the only effective means of preventing the disease and controlling it in the community. The measles vaccine is included in the MMR vaccination which is given at age 15 months and 4 years as part of the childhood immunisation programme. If you are uncertain of your immunisation status contact your medical practice for advice. Note that the Health Centre has offered to provide free immunisation to both students and staff for those who need it.
