LATEST: A long-term city council worker is in a "stable condition" in hospital after being stabbed following the kidnapping of a woman in Christchurch this morning.
A 27-year-old Christchurch man wielding two large knives was shot by police after a rampage across the city that left at least three people in Christchurch Hospital and closed a primary school.
Speaking at the Christchurch City Council at noon, Mayor Bob Parker said he had been told the injured council employee was in a stable condition. "He has stabilised, and I'm told that's a very positive sign."
Parker said the council worker was on his way to a job when the seemingly random attack occurred. "It appears that the staff member was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Parker said the man, in his 50s, had worked at the council for "a number of decades".
The victim's family had asked that he not be identified.
"He has been with us for many many years and he is very well liked," Parker said.
The council was "saddened and shocked" by the news, he said. "The news has rippled through the council building this morning ... People are shocked by this."
Council staff had spoken to the family and would provide support where possible.
"Basically, anything we can do in a supportive way, we will. The main thing is that we're standing by him, and we're here to support him," Parker said.
He said at least one senior staff member had been to the hospital to visit the victim.
Parker hoped to visit the man as soon as it was convenient for the family.
Drama began at Redwood school at 7am
Police Assistant Commissioner Dave Cliff said the drama began at Redwood School about 7am when a man was found in the school grounds.
The school caretaker called police after the man threatened him with a knife.
The man fled the scene, kidnapping a woman, an employee of Goodtime Foods Limited who was delivering food to Redwood School.
She was forced to drive towards Halswell, but the pair stopped at the corner of Hoon Hay Rd and Halswell Rd about 8am, possibly because of heavy traffic.
Police said the woman was stabbed, suffering moderate injuries, before her alleged kidnapper leapt out of the car.
It is understood the crazed man then repeatedly stabbed a Christchurch City Council worker who was in a work car. This man is in a critical but stable condition in hospital with his wife at his side.
At a press conference this morning, police said they had repeatedly ordered the man to drop his knives, but he did not. Attempts to use pepper spray and a Taser both failed to stop the man who rushed at police.
Officers armed with a Glock pistol then fired two shots, hitting the man in the arm and shoulder.
The man was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being admitted to hospital. |
