An acceptable sponsor must meet all of the following requirements. They must:

Be ordinarily resident in New Zealand.
Have been the holder of a New Zealand residence class visa, or a New Zealand citizen, for at least 3 years before the application is made.
Have spent at least 184 days in New Zealand in each of the three 12-month portions within that three-year period.
Not be subject to conditions imposed under Section 49 of the Immigration Act 2009.
Not be liable for deportation.
Be able to meet their sponsorship undertakings.

Sponsorship undertakings
When sponsoring someone under the Parent Category, a person undertakes to:

Provide suitable accommodation for the sponsored person in New Zealand if the sponsored person is unable to pay for their own accommodation  
Pay the reasonable costs of provisions needed for the sponsored person’s health and welfare in New Zealand if they are unable to pay for these themselves. This may include food, clothing and medical treatment where required.
Meet any costs associated with the sponsored person leaving New Zealand at the end of the sponsorship period if the person:  
does not have the means for their own repatriation (or refuses to pay for it), or  
is liable for deportation.
Meet any costs that are incurred during the sponsorship period related to the sponsored person’s deportation, which could include the costs of locating, detaining and maintaining the person, and their travel costs in being deported.
Under the Parent Category, the sponsorship undertakings will remain in place for 5 years from the date your parent(s) is/are granted residence.
