Husband 'struggling' after wife killed in police car crash

The family of a woman killed after the vehicle she was in collided with a patrol car say they are not angry and do not blame police for the accident.

A police sergeant was on his way to a 'priority one' job, where offenders were still at the scene of an alleged burglary, when his marked police car and a 4WD being driven by a member of the public collided at 8.39am in south Auckland.

The officer suffered minor injuries, but the female passenger in the other car, mother-of-four Liku Onesi, died en route to Middlemore Hospital.

It is understood Onesi was on her way to her family church, where she worked, when the vehicle her husband was driving turned in front of a speeding police vehicle. Her husband is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The smash happened on Ormiston Road, close to the intersection of Preston Road and East Tamaki Road.

Family say her husband Sione is confused and struggling with the loss of his wife.

Onesi's nephew, Akapei Kilikiti, told ONE News: "We wish we could have another day with you... to say we love you and everything like that."

"She was always there for my 21st, my engagement and my wedding, my kids first birthday."

John Tims, District Commander for Counties Manukau, said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and the injured man that is in Middlemore Hospital."

Tims said at a press conference today that the district and New Zealand police will do everything they can to support the injured man, his family and his extended family.

"Police are committed to finding out what occurred this morning not only for ourselves but for the family. We need to know what occurred.

"This incident is every police officer's worst nightmare I am saddened by the events of today.

"Police officers all around the country come to work every day to keep our community safe. We never want something like this to happen."

He said he will support the sergeant involved in the crash and his family.

"The police officer is distressed and shocked he was taken to Accident and Emergency but has been discharged.

"He will be taking time off to recover from the accident," Tims said.

Witnesses say they heard a "bang", and that it looked like Onesi had been thrown from the vehicle.

Joseph Helu, a church worker, said: "We came from Tonga from the same place I know them both, she is a nice person the family, the brother is a pastor, they come from a good family."

Tims said he will be travelling to Counties Manukau and will contact the victim's family and the police officer involved.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the crash and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised.

The sirens were flashing on the police car at the time of the crash. The speed of the police car would be part of the investigation.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

It is the second fatality involving a police car since 1994.

An alleged offender who was at the location the police officer was heading to has been taken into custody.
