The Big Read: Starved woman Ena Dung denied her human decency
Ena Lai Dung died in a pool of her own urine and faeces, starved, dehydrated, neglected and in extreme pain.
She weighed just 29kg and was found on the green plastic sheet she was confined to amongst maggots and flies.
Broken bones from falls meant the 76-year-old was unable to move, feed or care for herself leaving her entirely dependent on her daughter, Cindy Melissa Taylor, 43, and two unrelated housemates - couple Luana Roberta Taylor, 56, and Brian Frank Taylor.
But all three neglected their duty of care.
Today, they were sentenced for Ena's death at the High Court at Auckland.
Cindy was jailed for 13 years and three months for manslaughter and two dishonesty charges while Luana was sentenced to six years three months for failing to protect a vulnerable adult and Brian to six years for the same offence.
As he delivered his sentence, Justice Edwin Wylie said it was a case never seen before in New Zealand and that it was difficult to "imagine death in worse or more degrading circumstances".

她虽然以前也干过一些坏事,但是这么个死法。。。太恐怖了

A Taupo woman is alleged to have been the ringleader in an elaborate scam involving pensioners to get the painkiller pethidine for her own use.
Standing in the dock in Masterton District Court yesterday, flanked by her three co-accused, Luana Roberta Taylor, 47, entered no plea to charges alleging her involvement in a scam that targeted doctors, pharmacies and hospitals throughout the North Island.
On either side of her, Gordon Joe, 64, and Whakatane couple Hok Lai Dung, 73, and his wife Ena Lai Dung, 69, tried to conceal their faces by holding up charge sheets.
Drug scam pensioners try to change story
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/28006/Drug-scam-pensioners-try-to-change-story
Three pensioners drawn into elaborate scams to obtain the painkiller pethidine made last-ditch attempts to change their stories in Masterton District Court.
But their about-face - while maintaining their guilty pleas - did not wash with Judge Geoffrey Ellis.
"You are not only charged with lying and defrauding but you have told different stories at different times. The latest letter you give me is another change.
"I do not accept it is the truth. I believe there is pressure coming from elsewhere for you to accept more responsibility than you should. Think carefully about what you are doing."
Retired Chinese couple Hok Lai Dung, 74, and his wife Ena, 69, and Taupo man Gordon Joe, 64, had already admitted their part in the deception.
