Fishermen and women line Murrays Bay Wharf on a cloudy morning.
Some fishermen have been causing a stink at a new wharf on Auckland's North Shore.
Murrays Bay Wharf was opened at the bay in November 2016.
Since then users of social media site Neighbourly have shared concerns about fishermen cutting bait on the handrails of the wharf. Hibiscus and Bays Local Board member Julia Parfitt says she has even gone to the wharf herself to talk to its users.
Parfitt says the new wharf has had some teething difficulties, but the board plans to add more bait stations as well as signage in Mandarin and English advising anglers to take care and clean up after themselves.

"It's always been an issue about the fine balance between fishing interests and the jumpers," Parfitt says.
Auckland Council's northern area manager of operations, Julie Pickering says the wharf has been designed in a way to cater to different groups, with an allocated area for fishing and one for those using the wharf to access, and jump into, the water.
She says since the wharf opened the council has received four complaints.
"We are taking steps to address the issues raised and bait boards are being installed," she says.
"We're pleased to see that the Murrays Bay community is making great use of the wharf … in order to ensure it remains in the best possible condition … We would like to ask everyone using the wharf to ensure they remove any litter and waste when they leave."

Pickering says this wasn't as much of an issue with the old wharf, which was narrower and not as easy to fish off, but the new wharf is attracting more users.
Users of social media site Neighbourly shared their concerns about the wharf.
"Our beautiful new wharf is fast becoming a smelly mess with fish scales all along and flies, and a railing that is untouchable," one user said.
Another said the lack of bait boards was an oversight when building the wharf and a tap would make it easy to clean up.
"Without either, even with the best will in the world, it will be messy."
A Mairangi Bay resident said the fishermen's practices were "disgusting" and suggested putting up a sign forbidding cutting fish without a board or on a seat or railing. |
