Former Wallabies star Israel Folau reportedly received a staggering A$8 million settlement from Rugby Australia.

Rugby Australia and Folau issued a joint statement on Wednesday after reaching a confidential settlement, with both parties apologising for their actions.

"The Social Media Post reflected Mr Folau's genuinely held religious beliefs, and Mr Folau did not intend to harm or offend any person when he uploaded the Social Media Post.


"Mr Folau wants all Australians to know that he does not condone discrimination of any kind against any person on the grounds of their sexuality and that he shares Rugby Australia's commitment to inclusiveness and diversity."


Although the exact amount was not disclosed publicly, The Daily Telegraph has reported that Folau received A$8 million.

On the eve of mediation proceedings Folau upped his compensation claim to AU$14 million in lost income and damages, and reiterated his desire for an apology and reinstatement.

RMIT professor of workplace law Anthony Forsyth told the Sydney Morning Herald was highly likely the deal included a hefty financial pay out for the 74-test fullback.

"Given that he upped his claim to $14 million last week you'd have to expect that a significant amount of money has been paid," Professor Forsyth said.

"It should also been borne in mind that although Rugby Australia apologised, they actually apologised to each other. That's a mutually agreed conclusion, so nothing much should be drawn from that."
