Reaction from Canterbury residents
Gerard 'Jed' Oskam
My wife had our baby boy tonight at Christchurch Women's Hospital, delivered by caesarean at 10.08pm. At about 10.30pm they were transferred down the corridor to the recovery ward. We were only there a couple of minutes when the quake hit. I can say it caused our little one to show his disapproval at it (a great set of lungs on him) and a very nervous time for both my wife and I. It was a hard shake all around, similar in feeling to both the February and last week's earthquakes, all of which I experienced at the Central Police Station where I work. Both the surgical and ward staff were absolutely fantastic, reassuring and comforting us after this big scare and ensuring we were well looked after. We hear the Women's Hospital is one of the safest buildings in Christchurch, so we're kind of grateful for being there rather than at home. Heck of a story for us to tell the wee one when he's old enough to understand.

I was biking along in Riccarton on the Corner of Straven and Riccarton Roads when I heard a rumble, thinking "here we go again" I jumped off my bike and clung onto the nearest set of street lights. Looking across the street I could see the lights shaking like nuts it was pretty scary it was the first time since the first sequence of events (7.1 and subsequent aftershocks) that I had really freaked out definitely got the heart Pumping! I knew that it was a decent size one I was thinking conservatively maybe a 4.7-5.3 but I did not expect the epicentre to be near Akaroa on another Fault! Thankfully we are safe and didn't lose power in Fendalton.

We are in Hornby, it was a really loud violent jolt and didn't last for as long as the other ones. We have more damage than anything we sustained in the last 3 quakes. Felt a lot different than the previous ones. Things that haven't moved before have all fallen over and we now have quite a few cracks. Felt close to the September shake, definitely larger than a 5.3.

I was in my home in Saint Albans. Felt more like last Mondays aftershock. Started off reasonably small then got much larger. I was already under a door frame so I just held on as I don't have a table to dive under! My electricity was still connected unlike my parents' who are in Avonhead. They were without power for about 45mins. Took a while for me to stop shaking and I made sure we had everything prepared and a plan made out just in case it set off another larger one.

I was in Merivale when it hit, and the building really shook. Started gradually then got stronger. Found out where it was centred, then rushed home to our home in Wigram. Few things fallen, but no biggie. Daughter who lives in Hornby rang to say their kitchen cupboards flew open with everything flying out of it. Spoken to others from Hornby, who reckon it felt more like a 6.0 than a 5.3. We thought it was a 5.5 in Merivale.

Near Candys rd on Halswell Rd. No power again. Broken contents. Checked neighbours, all ok. Some homes have damage to brick cladding etc. No sign of liquefaction by torchlight

I live in Riccarton. I felt the aftershock over here really bad, it was like a big rumbling sound then there was a lot of shaking. I was in bed when it hit then we had a little one then that other big one and my whole flat was shaking and I could swear everything was spinning too. I just hope everyone else out there is safe and they are looking after each other. Please everyone be careful and take care out there. I am lucky to still have power and water unlike most places my prayers and thoughts are with you all. Stay strong and try and be positive.

I was laying in bed and it was a massive sudden jolt! most of stuff in house fell over. power went out for about 1 hr or so. was pretty freaky felt like the Feb. 22nd quake but shorter.

Just thought it was interesting that Telecom cellphone coverage has been down since the 5.3, not sure if it is related or not. The 5.3 was a very strongly felt earthquake out in Rangiora, but I just hope Akaroa is ok after that one.

Definitely felt it! Straight under the desk and took ages for heart to stop pounding and hands to stop shaking. |
