An anonymous donor has given $5 million to schoolchildren in Christchurch's shattered eastern suburbs.
The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal said it was the biggest donation it had received from an individual.
The anonymous donation would help fund community-based projects for schoolchildren in the east.
The earthquake appeal said the money would fund indoor sports activites, safe indoor play and homework areas, wireless internet spaces and a range of supervised activities for schoolchildren.
"We are immensely grateful to this donor, as well as all those who have donated anonymously, who have been moved by the challenges facing Christchurch and its children, and by the resilience and strength shown in the city, and offered to help," said Mark Weldon, of the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
The appeal has also received a million dollar-plus donation that has been directed to Christchurch's eastern suburbs.
Weldon said the donations would be combined and residents in the east would see the benefits soon
