The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) says there is the potential for a tsunami to hit New Zealand after a powerful 7.8 earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands.
The Kermadecs lie 800km north of New Zealand.
There has been a tsunami advisory warning issued for the Pacific - for the Kermadec Islands, Tonga and New Zealand based on the size of the quake, although it's not yet know if an actual tsunami has been generated.
If there is a tsunami, it is estimated it would hit New Zealand at these times:
East Cape - 8.52am
North Cape - 8.54am
Gisborne - 8.59am
Auckland's east coast - 10am
Civil Defence New Zealand says people should stay away from the New Zealand coastline until it assesses exactly what the threat is.
People in coastal areas should:
1. Stay off beaches
2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
3. Do not go sightseeing
4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
6. Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities. |
