I am very sad to have to inform you that there has been a death on campus in what appears to be an isolated incident. Police are investigating and are contacting next of kin.   We will not be releasing any further information at this stage.

    A death on the Canterbury University campus is not being treated as suspicious, police say.  

（5/Aug) The body of a 20-year-old male student was found on the fifth floor roof of the 12-storey James Hight building, which houses the central library.  

(7/Aug) The body of a 20-year-old Wellington man was found on the fifth-floor roof of the 12-storey James Hight building.

  
( 8/Aug) According to Dr Rod Carr, Vice-Chancellor of UC.
The student is Christopher McPherson, an Engineering student in his second Professional year ...I can confirm that funeral arrangements for Chris will be advised in The Press this week.  The University will be represented. We are also arranging a blessing atthe James Hight library... Chris was an intelligent, highly motivated student with a great personality and wide circle of friends.

Police are investigating a death on the Canterbury University campus.

It is understood a body was lifted by crane from the fifth floor of the 12-storey James Hight building, which houses the central library.

Also at the scene this morning were two police cars and a hearse.

The building is surrounded by scaffolding as it is undergoing earthquake repairs.

In a media release, the university said it appeared to be "an isolated incident", but it was not releasing any further information "at this stage".

A police spokesman said they were advised about the death at 8.30am today and are not treating it as suspicious.

Police were notifying next of kin.

I was deeply saddened earlier today to have to announce the death of a person on campus last night. He was a 20-year-old male student from Wellington. Police were called to the campus this morning after a body was found on the Level 5 roof of the Central Library by a contractor on the site.

Police are investigating and will be releasing further details about the student’s identity once next of kin have been informed. Police have said that the student’s death is not considered suspicious.  

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the student who has died.

We will not be confirming any other details about the student at this stage but we will provide the University community with more information when it is appropriate to do so and in a manner that respects the sensitivities of those who have been bereaved.  We will be organising an appropriate blessing of the site.

We are working with the police to offer every support to them that we can at this time.  

I encourage you all, staff and students, to seek any support that you may need from friends, colleagues, the UCSA welfare team or the counsellors at the University’s Health Centre. The counselling team are ready and willing to help.

I also strongly encourage our students to contact family and friends to reassure them that they are safe and well.

A tragic death such as this can be very difficult to comprehend and it is important that we support each other during this very sad time.

My thoughts are with you all.
