Message from Ian Simpson
Today we update the fi gures from our Wednesday advertisement. Some of this shows the progress we
are making as we work through the claims. Some of it shows the type and numbers of the claims we
have received.
It is worth noting that while we report that we have received 111,070 claims these actually break down
in many cases into separate claims for buildings only, contents only and land only. The total of these is
currently 140,176.
The Insurance Council is calling the Canterbury earthquake the single largest insurance event in New Zealand. Further to that,
we believe that it means that EQC is handling the largest number of claims ever by any single insurance organisation in the
Southern Hemisphere.
This has stretched our ability to deal with those claims yet we believe we are making good progress. Of course we are fully
aware of the frustration of many claimants and grateful that most appreciate the enormity of the task and accept that it will be
some time before the process will be complete.
In the meantime, our project manager Fletcher Construction has been establishing our fi rst site offi ce for repairs in the $10,000
to $100,000 range this week and we can now expect to see the work start in earnest.
We are still receiving several hundred new claims per day. We continue to urge
people who have yet to do so to lodge their claim without delay. The sooner
we can get all claims into the system the better.
Ian Simpson chief executive, Earthquake Commission
Types and status of claims
The chart below shows in broad terms the three types of claims, whether they have been closed i.e. completely settled or resolved in some
other way, and how much has been paid out for each type. Some payments are made before a claim is closed. This is because there will
be some aspects of the claim that have yet to be settled. |
