In August 2012 we asked 8,500 members how reliable their cars were. Above-average reliability is dominated by several Japanese manufacturers: Daihatsu, Honda, Lexus, Suzuki and Toyota.

Some Japanese brands are average: Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Subaru. In this group were also European makes such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and VW and also Hyundai from Korea.

No Japanese brands were below average. Brands that were included the European Peugeot, the Australian-European Ford, the Australian-Korean Holden and the Korean Kia.

There results strongly suggest thatt where a car is manufactured has some bearing on its reliability.

Tips:
1. Bargain if you can. Dealers expect it.
2. Get non-minor faults fixed by the dealer before you buy. Don't let the dealer use them for price hagging.
3. Find two or three vehicles you like so you can walk away if you don't get a good response on your first deal.
4. Don't rely on the “AA appraised” notices. There aren't a full itemised pre-purchase inspection.
5. Beware extended warranties. There often give you no greater protection than you would get under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
6. Don't get obsessed with the odometer reading. The overall condition of the vehicle is more important (modern well-maintained vehicles can run for hundreds of thousands of kilometres).
7. Buy a white or light-coloured vehicle. They are far more visible to other drivers and therefore safer.
8. Buy as new a car as you can with modern safety features such as airbags, ABS, traction and stability control.
9. Deal with a dealer. They must give you good title to the car and legal protections you won't get if you buy privately.

Consumer NZ recommend:
Medium Cars
Ford Focus
Engine: 1.6L-2.0L
Fuel type: Diesel, Petrol
Fuel consumption: 5.3L-6.4L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Average
Verdict: A deservedly very popular car though not quite as much fun as its predecessor. The ride is comfortable and refined, cabin has a “premium” feel, the front seats have huge headroom but it isn't
as  much fun to drive as the previous model, rear-seat headroom is restricted, the boot floor isn't completely flat when the seats are folded down.

Honda Civic Euro
Engine: 1.8L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 6.1L-6.5L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Above average
Verdict: Has little in common with the Civic saloon and is well worth a look. Has flexible and versatile multi-fold rear seats that provide plenty of seating and luggage-carrying oprions, fuel economy is better than it used to be but the two-tiered instrument cluster isn't to everyone's taste, steering may be over-light for some.

Hyundai i30
Engine: 1.6L-1.8L
Fuel type: Diesel, Petrol
Fuel consumption: 4.5L-6.9L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Average
Verdict: Aiming for the top of the class and it may be there already. The ride is supple, comfort level is high, is very well equipped, front seats have plenty of shoulder and headroom, rear seats have good legroom and headroom but steering wanders a little in the straight-ahead position, there is more body-roll while cornering that in some of its competitors, it maybe a little expensive.

Mazda 3
Engine: 2.0L, 2.5L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 6.2L-8.6L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Average
Verdict: A good car with an impressive range of engines to choose from. Spacious and airy interior with plenty of front and rear headroom, engines range from economical to high performance but rear visibility is poor.

Subaru Impreza
Engine: 2.0L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 6.8L-7.1L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Average
Verdict: These more mundane verions of the sporty WRX are good cars. Ride is “compliant”, handling is composed, steering is well weighted, all-wheel drive is great for slippery conditions (and makes this car the skiers' choice) but the performance of the non-WRX versions is only adequate.

Toyota Corolla
Engine: 1.8L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 7.3L-7.4L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Above average
Verdict: A competent car with legendary reliability and assured re-sale value. Roomy interior with good headroom and legroom, available as saloon or hatchback, excellent second-hand choice (stability control fitted 2007+) but not that exciting to drive, handbrake action is awkward.

People movers
Toyota Previa
Engine: 2.4L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 9.5L/100km
Safety starts: four out of five stars
Reliability: Above average
Verdict: A full-sized MPV that's as good as they get. Cruising is comfortable, its height gives great visibility, there is enough space for 8 passengers in some versions, convenient sliding side doors but the Previa can feel big to drive and park until you get used to it.

Small Cars
Daihatsu Sirion
Engine: 1.3L, 1.5L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 5.8-6.7L/100km
Safety starts: four out of five stars
Reliability: Above average
Verdict: A popular and practical runabout (made by Toyota). Chunky styling gives a good interior space and front-seat headroom, back seats fold to form a flat surface for loads, luggage space is adequate but handbrake and gear lever are set low (may be difficult to reach for some), the 1.3 model has fewer “standard” safety features than the 1.5.

Honda Jazz
Engine: 1.3L, 1.5L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 5.8-6.7L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Above average
Verdict: Top of the class. A class leader for space and flexibility, has very clever multi-fold rear seats that provide plenty of seating and luggage-carry options, the ride's much better than the previous model's but ride could still be better, has had stability control only since February 2011 (if you're buying second-hand), is expensive.

Mazda
Engine: 1.5L
Fuel type: Petrol
Fuel consumption: 6.4-6.8L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Average
Verdict: A good car, but not if you want lots of space. Good to drive, with spirited performance and sharp handling, styling is funky and modern but rear-seats have limited headroom and legroom, is tight to get into and out of and has smallish luggage compartment.

Suzuki Swift
Engine: 1.3L-1.6L
Fuel type: Diesel, Petrol
Fuel consumption: 4.2-6.5L/100km
Safety starts: five out of five stars
Reliability: Above average
Verdict: A deservedly popular car that's good around town and on the open road. Good cabin space, safety has improved since previous model, has good range of engines including a diesel, a good second-hand choice but the ride could be better, luggage space is small, diesel is only available with manual transmission.

SUV
Hyundai Santa Fe
Engine: 2.2L-3.5L
Fuel type: Diesel, Petrol
Fuel consumption: 7.4L-9.6L/100km
Safety starts: four out of five stars
Reliability: Below Average
Verdict: Deservedly popular and a third generation is imminent. Practical and quiet, the ride is comfortable in the front two seat rows, copes with rough surfaces well, has large luggage space and comes as a 5 or 7 seater, a good second-hand pick but body roll can become tiring on twisty roads, steering is woolly, below average reliability for interior fittings.

Mazda CX5
Engine: 2.0L-2.2L
Fuel type: Diesel, Petrol
Fuel consumption: 5.7-6.4L/100km
Safety starts: four out of five stars
Reliability: Average
Verdict: A class leader. Ultra-modern, fuel-efficient engines and built to save weight. Comfortable, drives well, had good passenger and luggage space, petrol and diesel engines are very refined and smooth, is available as 2WD or 4WD (the 2WD is cheaper) but the cabin storage space could be better.

哈哈  被伤成这样子了....不至于 不至于  我个人感觉奥迪大众都是特别皮实的车   性价比十分好啊   但是在新西兰audi有点小贵   呵呵

迪拜这边出租车全都是camry....

大街上的街车就是landcruiser.....

说实话身边的朋友还真没有见过开着两种车的人抱怨过....

所以我认为应该是much more bove average :)

这个reliability如何定义?如果简单的理解为durability,那为何2012才推出的cx-5直接落得个average,那得要多少cx-5同时坏在路上啊。
文章一开始说aus-European Ford below average, 后面focus又变成了average...确实看不懂。

召回也不完全说明质量不好,也可以说是有负责任的态度,有时候宁愿买经常有召回的品牌,也不愿买一些从来从来都没有召回过的品牌
