Reflective Service for Victims of the Chinese Earthquake

A Reflective Service for the victims of the Chinese earthquake and for those who might be affected from among our students is scheduled to take place in the afternoon of Wednesday 21st May around 4.30pm – 6pm in the Round Room of the Atrium Building. The event is scheduled to include some quiet reflective time, prayer, and the opportunity for a variety of individuals to speak. All are welcome to attend.

Dear colleagues and fellow students,

As you maybe aware, China has suffered it’s worst earthquake in over 30 years. On 12th May 2008,
at approximately 2.30pm (Beijing time), China’s south-western province of Sichuan was struck by a
catastrophic earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake, and the following smaller
“aftershocks”, have lead to significant loss of life, as well as caused substantial damage to property
and infrastructure. As of 20th May, approximately 34,000 people have been reported dead, with this
number expected to rise, as tens of thousands are still missing.

The victims of this earthquake are in urgent need of assistance. Authorities are doing everything
possible to alleviate the situation, but with a disaster of this scale (the earthquake has been estimated
to cost US $20 billion - Reuters) victims are in need of all the help they can get.

So in response to this situation, Palmerston North Chinese Scholars and Students Association (PN)
and
Massey University Chinese Students’ Association (Albany) are working together to organise a
Massey-wide fundraising event on Wednesday (星期三), 21 May, to help collect funds on behalf
of the earthquake victims. Following events are based on Albany campus:
