The Earthquake Commission has spent $138 million on wages since the September 4 earthquake.

Figures released today show the commission has gone from 22 to more than 1200 employees between September 4 and July 1.

These people have been paid a total of $137.98 million, with assessors being paid between $60 and $75 an hour.

Commission chief executive Ian Simpson defended the cost, saying the scale of the quakes clearly justified the number of staff and their pay packets.

"Our aim has, from the beginning, been to give our claimants certainty around their situation as soon as possible,'' he said.

"We needed to grow the team as quickly as possible to achieve this."

Simpson said the salaries were introduced after the September quake, with the expectation that people would be employed for six months, he said.

"The February earthquake changed the landscape completely for EQC, meaning a few people continued to be employed for a much longer period."

Simpson said if the commission could not retain qualified, experienced assessors, it had to train new people, which was costly and time-consuming.

The prices paid were in line with market rates, and many employers worked 10 hours a day, six days a week, he said.

Many were private contractors and had no job security, he said.

Well I would like to know who, if anyone has been paid out for damage. No one I know has been paid out for anything as yet, just more promises of it will be paid in the next few weeks, then Oct, then December, and now got told January!!! I have had enough of broken promises. What would happen if we "Promised" to pay our insurance each month for a year and did not? I really feel sorry for the people who lost everything and have yet to be settled.

Such a shame that those doing all the paperwork aren't getting paid anything like the guys going out in the field. The office staff are doing all the donkey work and get nothing in way of compensation for all of their hardwork and they are all Canterbury people who need to wages.

With all this money being currently expended, how can they justify the why in which they work with no set methods. For example our street has been randomly assessed since Feb with half completed and the other half outstanding. Why can't they do it street by street and save time effort and money?

@Iana #3: That can't be right. You see, we live in Northwood, and we've seen NO ONE from EQC at all about house damage! And none of our neighbours have either. So that kinda blows that theory out of the water, doesn't it?

(We don't have bad damage, so we're not expecting to see them anytime soon... but I'm so sick of hearing how those of us who happened to be lucky enough to not have damage on the north and west side seem to be somehow privileged. The fact of the matter is, nature strikes randomly, whether it be a tornado or an earthquake. Don't make it sound like we're snobs or whatever just because of where our house happens to be located...)

People of Chch have undoubtedly had it the hardest of all, and they have a right to be upset in their situation, and all of New Zealand continues to mourn alongside them; we are a small country and community and everybody (in or out of Chch) knew someone affected by the quakes. But the people who have left behind their loved ones and regular jobs in other cities to work on assessing homes in Chch (slow as it may seem) – well these people should be commended, and thanked. They are there because they want to help, not because they want to make a buck. It can be risky work at times, and families left behind in other cities do worry at night. Assessing damages to determine whether you demolish a building or repair it is not a layman’s job, it requires education and experience that the average Joe does not have. So when my partner comes to your house to assess, please be kind, nay – be hospitable and thankful, because he’s not there to take advantage of your misfortune, he’s there because he studied and worked very hard for 5 years at UC for a hard-earned engineering degree that his taken him around the world volunteering his skills to aid other countries, and now that NZ needs him he is keen to give something back to the region that gave him his life’s work.

And Ng #5, I agree, after any large and involved process such as what the EQC has implemented over the last year, there should always be an audit, regardless of how well (or otherwise) the process is carried out, there is always room for improvement and ways to better our systems.

What is of concern is that even after having spent $138 million as wages on 1200 staff; which averages a hefty six figure sum of $115,000 per employee, the performance of EQC has been dismal. It is unacceptable to all those who paid their insurance premiums on time to have to wait this long and very likely more, to get their life back on track purely because the state insurer who advised everyone else to be prepared for a disaster couldn’t be bothered themselves. Ian Simpson should go, sooner rather than later.

Will there be an audit to determine how much of this money could have been saved with greater effeciency and more sensible systems? At least $3,000 was wasted re-assessing our Avonside house after February, EQC wouldn't listen to us when we said we had already settled with our insurance company and I have discovered this happened to many others. I'm sure there are other examples of wasting money. Things need to be honestly reviewed and improved on, not to judge or blame but to simply create good systems that are robust enough to deal with a sizeable disaster.

Is this statement some kind of a joke ? ..... 12 months on and have only just had full assesment, and trying to find out what is going on with the contents claim well you may as well phone someone random from Ethiopia (no offence intended to the people of ethiopia).

I have no problembs with the amounts that the assesors are or have been being paid after all not everyone would like to go into a munted building to asses the damage while it is still being rocked by after shocks but to state that "many were private contractors and had no job security" is a little lame as I don't know of any private contractors that do have job security, come to think of it I dont know many private contractors earning $60 to $75 an hour, by those figures they are earning around $3600 to $4500 gross per week. Not bad not bad at all.

agree peg #1, it seems to be the ones in the east side bad zones that get seen last, all the ones from UPPER RICCARTON, FENDALTON that have been repaired and paid out!@!!!!!

不是对EQC辛苦的员工不感谢。只是在NZ这么困难的这几年，在NZ其他政府部门和企业大裁员的时候，我们真的需要花那么多钱吗？有没有可能少花点钱，提高效率多办点事儿呢？

真是EQC欢喜，老百姓愁啊。

听个朋友说，那次下大雪，如果那天自然没去EQC 上班的就直接发正常当天的薪水。但如果那天主动出现在工作岗位的，买杯咖啡，开车回家，也是不用上班，但当天是double pay.我觉得他们这也太拿着纳税人的血汗钱不当钱吧？冒个头就给doube pay？这工作没人不愿意做，做的越久越好。

建议，他们应该开放office,来个open day什么的。让咱也见识见识高收入的EQC XDJM 每天的工作到底压力有多大。
