Survey of microbiological quality and chemical residue testing of basa and tilapia fish species
These are the results of a survey carried out under the Annual Imported Food Monitoring Programme.
SummaryIn 2008 NZFSA conducted a survey of imported land-based aquaculture. Fin fish was excluded from this survey as there was no product being imported during the time the survey was being conducted. The 2009 survey of basa and tilapia is an extension of the 2008 survey.
The results from the 2008 survey can be accessed from the following link:
http://www.foodsafety.govt.nz/science/research-projects/food-residues-surveillance-programme/
Only one commercial consignment of basa was sampled and tested as there was a problem with the required certification on matters unrelated to possible contamination, thus impeding imports. This issue has subsequently been resolved. No commercial consignments of tilapia were imported. However, a sample of tilapia that was imported as a trade sample was tested as part of the survey.
A total of twenty-one samples (one sample of tilapia from China and 20 samples of basa from Viet Nam) were taken during the period of the survey.
Given the low number of imports, NZFSA contacted importers of these fish products and asked if they were intending to import basa or tilapia. Only the importer of the basa was intending to continue importing this product. No importers were intending at this time to import tilapia.
Test results showed that there were no unacceptable levels of microbiological contamination found in the samples tested.
No detectable levels of antimicrobial residues were found in any samples with the exception of one sample of basa which was found to contain the chemical Gentian Violet at a level of 0.0022mg/kg. Gentian Violet is not an approved chemical in farmed agriculture in Viet Nam and therefore should not be detected in fish from Viet Nam. Gentian Violet is not registered for any food producing animals including aquaculture in New Zealand and so the Food Act default MRL of 0.1mg/kg1 applies. It is registered as a veterinary medicine for pets.
NZFSA has informed the importer and Viet Nam officials of the detection of Gentian Violet.
