What to do if your car got hit by someone.......?

Hi everyone,

my car got hit on the 4th of may 2009 just right before an intersection, a car wasn't able to stop or wasnt concentrating so my cat got hit at the back.....
The driver is a maori/pacific island looking female, I think maybe around 20 yeard old, first she apologized and asked if I was okay, and I said yep.....
then the driver with her friend tried to leave but I brought up that the car isn't mine and so they need to do something about it.
The car I was driving belongs to my mum, although the accident wasn't that ba, the plumber looked as if it was going to fall....and quite a bit of scratches and dents/pits appeared
at the back as a result of the incident.....They offered to replace the plumber by ordering it themselves and said will contact me when the plumber arrives, after that, I wrote down her plate number and exchanged contact detals... but only limited to phone numbers...

After they left, I just realised how could they order the plumber when they dont even know the type of car I was driving (they didn't even check the specs of the car).
After I got home, my mum gave me a long talk on the incident and about how I should have asked for their drivers license number and address, things like that.
I know I should have done that as well but I was quite nervous as I never came across these type of things....-.-

Anyway due to my time restrictions, I passed on the girl's phone number to my mother so she could ring them up, but for a few days, my mum wasn't able to reach her.
Finally after around a week of time, she managed to pick up the phone after I rang her numerous times, she said that she could meet up and talk abt the issues with me the following sunday.
Later that afternoon, I went to an auto service place and got a quote on how much it would cost to fix the rear pumbler, it was quoted to be $690.

When the sunday finally arrived, the girl didn't contact me like she said she would and I wasn't able to reach her. The following week, I tried ringing her whenever I am able to, but not very often because my landline at home cant call mobile numbers....and its quite expensive to call with my cell phone, what upset me the most was wasting money to reach her mail box.....
anyway, she picked up the phone one morning and I told her about the quote and she said she would like to order it herself, so I gave her info on my car.
Ever since that, I wasn't able to reach her besides leaving alot of voice messages..............

I was quite helpless then, but some friends told me that I could get the person's registration info from a postshop so I went to a post shop maybe last week to get the registration details, it costed 2, 50$ so it was okay, i found that the person has cancelled their registration but with the address I hope I can do something about it, the ownership of the vehicle is not under the same name but they share the same last name, I am planning to visit their house tomorrow, but what this will lead is still unknown....

can you guys give me some advice on what to do if they deny ever hitting my car??
I am quite worried as my bf mentioned you cant eally go to the police with matters like this.........but I also thought I had been nice enough to keep trying to contact them and giving them time to deal with this matter, but this led to nothing but disappointment as it has already been over 3 months, with no contact from them.

Sorry, I know you are upset at moment, however you may not get anything useful after you visit her house. You should contact the police and ask them to help with. So I wan to ask whether you have any wintness during the accient occured?
