public places, registration, and dog safe communities.

What about requests for changes to dog access rules on specific parks and beaches, and" j: N1 q: v* n3 h$ z+ o* B

A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access& T B' |# ]0 B% @3 \
decisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation
$ z6 z5 S' w6 E* t3 H" gand Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting
: @4 Q0 M. a# M* ~8 xchanges to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the, h- v- W0 ]! {% h
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.
" ^4 h6 X9 y+ c5 ~" _One of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to
' f+ B2 k4 N% \) k1 Nbe used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to
7 h& m. p& L! Xadopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,2 L4 c/ W$ t6 D( _- a$ `
and to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier- R8 C4 o+ x6 M+ Q! Z
Island).$ k6 F4 a- @7 @! O
However, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
7 ~; P O* E2 [! Alocal boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the5 @# w( X3 o. ]" i4 e, p/ C
most appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer
, M9 t4 O; \4 g: x; Vtimes and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under5 T* ~' h( s9 l
control off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to

the current dog access rules (which use a mixture of times and dates across Auckland) will/ j4 E1 ?# w5 W4 J4 k
continue to apply, and not the standard summer time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour

2013. Any proposed changes will be publicly notified for submissions, and hearings will be
