A new approach to deciding dog access to parks and beaches will also start in 2013. Dog access& W6 C1 w8 `: T" p& C4 `! y4 e
decisions will be made by local boards for local parks and beaches, and by the Parks, Recreation" d- ?9 l0 a4 Y8 u" p/ v
and Heritage Forum for parks and beaches of regional significance. Submissions requesting0 \$ A4 E2 B- N3 ~0 r% D8 D
changes to dog access rules will be referred to local boards and the forum to consider using the- g# J. x( q* h7 j: _ G
new decision-making principles, criteria and guidance.3 I N3 x+ ]: g+ ^
One of the new criteria – raised by the majority of submissions - are standard times and seasons to; [( l' B @) p# B
be used wherever a time and season dog access rule is used on a beach. The decision was to1 l7 `% E& \$ l9 ?/ Q
adopt a standard summer beach time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour Weekend to 1 March,% i6 |2 D4 p2 T- p! E
and to exempt its application on Hauraki Gulf islands (including Waiheke Island and Great Barrier
5 ?4 E; Z3 g+ s% y/ C. WIsland).
3 a1 l# K6 Z- [! ^2 J q& VHowever, the new standard summer time and season will not be in effect until the forum and
+ ~% a5 \4 v9 q+ C/ A7 Rlocal boards have reviewed all beach dog access rules in each area. The review will identify the
( L: h' ~8 M! g0 t! Mmost appropriate mix of dog access rules for our beaches. This might mean that the new summer
: J1 g0 D% m7 u M) }! Ttimes and season will apply to some beaches, while for other beaches dogs may be allowed under
5 V7 i& I8 l0 {% K* V% \control off a leash at all times. The need to carry out this review and work out the best way to' |) k. W& e" N8 U5 m( b7 P
manage the safe interaction between people and dogs means that until those decisions are made5 ]- K( W9 Y: a+ o- z2 o
the current dog access rules (which use a mixture of times and dates across Auckland) will M. N$ B2 E6 q, e
continue to apply, and not the standard summer time and season of 10am and 5pm, Labour

Consideration of possible changes to dog access rules on beaches and specific parks will start in
