The name Silverdale originates from a public meeting held in 1911. The meeting rejected names like New Jerusalem and Mud-dale, and ultimately chose Silverdale. The name may have been inspired by the silver poplars in the area. Before 1911, the area was known as Te Wēiti or The Wade, an Anglicization of the Māori name for the place, according to Auckland Council.
